Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Local government autonomy is a fundamental principle in democratic governance, ensuring that local authorities have the power and independence to make decisions that best suit the needs of their communities. However, in many cases, political interference at the state and federal levels undermines local government autonomy, limiting their capacity to perform their duties effectively. In Karu Local Government Area (LGA), Nasarawa State, political interference has been a significant concern, influencing decision-making processes, resource allocation, and overall governance.
This study aims to explore the extent to which political interference affects the autonomy of local governments in Karu LGA. It will examine the nature of political interference, its impact on governance, and the local government's ability to fulfill its mandate. The study will also assess the consequences of diminished autonomy on service delivery and community development in the region.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Political interference in local government affairs has been a long-standing issue in Karu LGA, with state-level politicians exerting influence over the decisions and actions of local government officials. This interference has led to inefficiencies in service delivery, poor governance, and limited local development. Despite the constitutional provision for local government autonomy, political interference continues to undermine the effectiveness of local governance. This study will assess the effects of this interference on local government operations in Karu LGA.
